In Study 2 (n = 284), the retained 5-item model of PI fit a more diverse sample of Special Operations Forces personnel. The recommended 5-item model demonstrated convergent and criterion validity, similar in magnitude and direction to the 10- and 7-item versions of the model. Two problematic items were also removed, resulting in a 5-item model of PI. Removal of these items decreases cognitive load for participants and improves direct measurement of PI. The AAQ-II was determined to be a unidimensional structure and analyses supported removal of the three reverse-scored items from the 10-item version of the scale. In Study 1 (n = 416), the factor structure was examined using confirmatory factor analysis and alternative model testing. To address this need, responses from Special Operations Forces personnel were used to assess the psychometric properties of two versions of the AAQ-II, and to make a recommendation for the preferred model of the AAQ-II. The existence of multiple versions of the AAQ-II has caused confusion, and practitioners and researchers currently use both the 7- and 10-item versions. There is evidence for measuring performance enhancement interventions with the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), a measure of psychological inflexibility (PI). This demand has created a need for effective measurement of mental skills training interventions. This new approach incorporates advances in testing methodology to make it more viable for use in large-scale, high-stakes testing applications.ĭemand for acceptance-based performance enhancement in the military has increased. These advances represent a new paradigm that relies less heavily on education credentials and can provide a more comprehensive and inclusive approach. This work has focused primarily on noncognitive, personality measures and how such measures can be combined with other existing measures for attrition screening during enlistment processing.
A primary purpose of this paper is to describe Army research to develop new indicators of adaptability to augment the current system based on education credentials. Historically, the services have relied on education credentials, with special emphasis on possessing a high school diploma, as a primary indicator of completion rates after enlistment and as a proxy for the ability to adapt to a military lifestyle.
Over the past decade, attrition rates in the Army have averaged between 25% and 30% during first-term periods of enlistment. Managing and reducing attrition during the first term of enlistment is a continuing priority for the services.
